Historic Russian Orthodox Church in Lachine

Built in 1911 as a Bukovinian Greek Orthodox church, this Lachine landmark now serves as a dependent parish of St. Nicholas Cathedral, dedicated to St. John the New of Suceava - a 14th-century merchant who held to his faith under torture and became the patron saint of merchants, especially venerated across Moldova and Romania. Divine Liturgy is celebrated here every other Saturday.

This church in Lachine dates back to 1911, originally built for the Bukovinian Greek Orthodox community - one of the borough's older ecclesiastical landmarks. Today it serves as a dependent parish of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Montreal, dedicated to St. John the New of Suceava.

St. John was a 14th-century merchant from Trebizond who refused to renounce his Orthodox faith even under torture, and is venerated today as the patron saint of merchants - especially in Moldova and Romania, where his relics rest in Suceava to this day.
