Historic Orthodox Cathedral, Since 1898

Since 1898 the first Orthodox church in Colorado has stood in north Denver, and today it is protected as a piece of the state history. This is a working cathedral with Byzantine icons, a choir, and a Sunday fellowship meal, welcoming parishioners and anyone who wants to see the living history of Orthodoxy in the American West.

The parish was founded in September 1898 in Globeville, an old working neighborhood of Denver where immigrants from Austria-Hungary, among them Carpatho-Rusyns, came to work in the smelters. Eleven founding members bought a lot at the corner of Logan Street and 47th Avenue, where the church still stands today. It began as a Greek Catholic community, but in 1903 the parishioners petitioned Bishop Tikhon, head of the Russian Orthodox Mission in America, and on June 15, 1903 they were received into the Orthodox Church. That made the church the first Orthodox church in Colorado.

In 1905 the church was consecrated by St. Tikhon of Moscow, the future Patriarch, who built the original altar table by hand and placed inside it relics of his own patron saint, St. Tikhon of Zadonsk. Few churches in the United States can say they were consecrated by St. Tikhon himself. In 1988 the church was raised to the rank of cathedral, the mother church of Orthodoxy in Colorado, and after 1990 it became a spiritual home for newcomers from Romania, Russia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. New Byzantine style icons were painted for the parish in time for its centennial.

- On Sunday at 9:10 a.m. for the Hours and Divine Liturgy
- On Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. for the Morning Liturgy
- On the last Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m. for the Memorial Liturgy

All services are in English, and broadcasts can be watched on the cathedral YouTube channel. After the Sunday Liturgy the whole parish gathers for a fellowship meal, a church school serves the children, a choir welcomes new voices, and the parish is active in charity work across Denver. Everyone is welcome, especially those who are just getting to know Orthodoxy.
