St Vladimir Russian Orthodox Church
Russian Orthodox Parish: Services, Sunday School, Church Kiosk
Russian Orthodox families have gathered in Houston since 1950, and today St Vladimir Church, part of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, is open for prayer every weekend: the all-night vigil on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and the Divine Liturgy on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. People come for feast days, for the baptism of their children, and simply to feel at home among their own.
The parish began with twelve Russian émigré families who gathered for feast days in private homes. A first chapel in an ordinary house followed, then a temporary chapel in a garage, and in May 1988 the parish consecrated its own church, in the year of the Millennium of the Baptism of Rus. Today it is a parish that keeps that story alive and hands it on to children.
Young parishioners have plenty to do here: Sunday school is free of charge, classes are taught in Russian after the liturgy, and students are grouped by age. The St. Xenia of Petersburg Sisterhood helps decorate the church for Christmas and Easter, and the church kiosk offers candles and handmade items.
Come for:
- Christmas and Easter services
- Sunday school for children
- The sacrament of baptism
- Festive meals in the church house
- Getting to know the parish and conversation after the service
The church doors are open to everyone: come at the start of a service, or call or write in advance if you would like to learn more about the parish.
