NH School of Languages, Math and Arts
Russian, Ukrainian, Math, Music and Art for Kids
Saturday in Nashua begins with a song: two-year-olds learn their first rhymes, while older kids solve puzzle problems, read in a book club and try STEM, all under one roof of a school that since 2009 has helped children keep Russian and Ukrainian and find friends they can speak their native language with.
Russian in the school goes by age: three- and four-year-olds meet the alphabet and read Barto, Chukovsky and Marshak, five-year-olds learn their first grammar topics and memorize poems, and children from eleven write essays, work through idioms and proverbs and read the classics. For those who speak English at home there is Russian as a foreign language. The Ukrainian course is built as a journey into Ukrainian culture: words and phrases by topic, popular books, poems and proverbs, a game of being an editor by translating into Ukrainian, customs and traditions.
The school math program was written about in 2014 by the New Hampshire Union Leader: the course for children aged four to eleven is based on textbooks by Peterson, Moro and Vilenkin plus problems that build resourcefulness. In art class children learn about neighbor colors, colors that are friends and color families, and student work is shown at exhibitions where each child sees a drawing hung like a real artist.
A handicraft class is open to children aged eight to thirteen:
- hot sandwiches, canapés and baked croissants
- beadwork
- crochet
- embroidery
- origami and scrapbooking
In music class children learn to sing properly, meet composers and musical notation, dance and prepare for concerts held through the year, including a Christmas show and a Mothers Day concert. Classes are held on Saturdays, and you can enroll by phone or by email.
