Russian School Olympus
Saturday Russian language, literature and clubs for children ages 3 to 17
Every Saturday in Potomac, Russian School Olympus opens its doors: children from three to seventeen read and write in Russian, discover literature, history and holidays, and find friends who share their interests. Eighteen program levels suit both those who speak Russian at home and those just beginning. The school has been teaching since 1994.
The school program includes:
- Reading and writing, and speech development for the youngest
- Russian language and literature for elementary, middle and high school
- Russian as a foreign language for ages four to fourteen, with a focus on spoken Russian
- History and cultural studies
- Math for elementary and middle school and for university applicants
- Preparation for the NEWL exam (AP Russian)
The NEWL exam opens the way for high schoolers to Russian language credits recorded on the diploma and to the Seal of Biliteracy. Classes are led by certified teachers trained in the American program, and Olympus students take part year after year in the national essay contest and the olympiad of spoken Russian. The school is approved as an institution that can recommend students for school credits in Montgomery County.
School clubs are free for students and are now open to children who do not attend the main classes:
- The Zhar-Ptitsa theater studio and a junior theater group
- The Golden Fish dance studio
- Music lessons called Merry Notes
- Drawing for little ones and the Skillful Hands crafts club
- Gymnastics, rhythmics and chess
For toddlers from one to three and their parents, the new Karapuz early development group offers interactive fairy tales, music games, crafts and lively conversation in Russian. During breaks and at lunch, children are served hot food from Russian cuisine: crepes, baked goods, dumplings and fresh salads. School plays at New Year, the Spring Festival and Graduation Day are a favorite.
Sign up for a tour, and you will be shown the school and helped to choose the right level for your child.
