Homemade Ukrainian Cuisine: Borscht, Stuffed Cabbage, Dumplings, Kielbasa
A plate of baked kielbasa with two sides of potato pancakes and cabbage and a bowl of borscht: this is lunch at Mama Marias Kitchen, where everything is made from scratch following the recipes of a real grandmothers kitchen. Since 2008, this small restaurant next to the State Meats butcher shop has fed guests the Ukrainian way: generously, hot, and unhurried.
The menu is built on big portions. Lunch plates come with two sides and a drink: choose from baked kielbasa made to the State Meats signature recipe, stuffed cabbage with meat and rice, German pork schnitzel, and fried fish. For those in a hurry, there are sandwiches with kielbasa and sauerkraut, with schnitzel, or with fish.
The sides are an event of their own: jumbo potato-and-cheddar dumplings, plov, pelmeni with meat and onion, potato pancakes, homemade cabbage and noodles, vinaigrette salad, German potato salad, and Ukrainian Olivier salad. There are four soups: borscht, kapusnaik, chenahy, and split pea with smoked meats. For dessert there are crepes filled with farmers cheese or blueberry filling and traditional pastries.
