Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Bloomingdale
St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Bloomingdale is a Ukrainian Orthodox parish active since 1970, under the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Around 150 families find a spiritual home here, centered on worship, prayer, and Ukrainian tradition.
The parish grew from six Ukrainian families with no building of their own in 1970 to roughly 150 families today. The current church was completed in 1987 and blessed to commemorate the Millennium of Ukrainian Orthodoxy (988-1988).
The Cathedral's choir performs Ukrainian liturgical and traditional music "in its purest form," has recorded several albums, and performs throughout the United States.
The parish runs a Saturday Ukrainian School with religious and cultural education, along with three Ukrainian folk dance ensembles - Horlytsia, Vodohray, and Metelyky - which rehearse twice a week and perform throughout Chicagoland.
The Saint Sophia Sisterhood, the backbone of the parish, sustains its operations through weekly sales of homemade varenyky (pierogi).
The 15-acre grounds also include a cemetery, a memorial to victims of the 1932-33 Holodomor genocide, and monuments to Ukrainian independence heroes, alongside the adjacent St. Andrew Co-op, a 23-unit retirement community.
The parish also hosts an annual Ukrainian Festival and cultural concerts throughout the year.
