Petropol
Russian books shipped across the U.S., with new releases
Petropol, Inc. is a Russian bookstore in Newton (by appointment) with direct contacts with leading publishers in Russia, so new books appear here almost at the same time as in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Orders from the website ship across the U.S. through UPS, a book that is not on the shelf is tracked down on request, and books that nobody hurries to publish are published by the store itself.
Many in Russian Boston know the store by name, and its catalog has a book for every taste and every occasion: fiction and poetry, biography, memoirs, history, children books and translated literature. The website works as a large searchable catalog, and any book can be put in an order and delivered by mail.
If the book you need is not in the store at the moment, do not hurry to the exit. First, if it is not here, it is unlikely to be found anywhere nearby. Second, the store will take your order and try not to keep you waiting long. Direct contacts with leading Russian publishers make it possible to offer new books almost at the same time as the shops of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and sometimes even earlier.
And when nobody is in a hurry to publish a good book, Petropol takes it on itself. That is how a three volume edition of Daniil Kharms, a new novel by Dina Rubina and a collection of poetry by David Samoilov came into being.
What you can find and order:
- Russian prose and poetry, from the classics to contemporary authors
- biographies in the Lives of Remarkable People series
- memoirs and history books
- children books, including classics such as the adventures of Dunno
- translated works of world literature in Russian
- books from the sale section at reduced prices
You can search by title, ISBN, author, publisher, series and content, and for films by title, director and actor. Wholesale buyers have a separate phone line. The store receives visitors by appointment only, so let them know before you come.
