St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral
Divine Services, Russian School, and Choir in Seattle
St. Nicholas Cathedral in Seattle is one of the oldest parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in the United States: the community was founded by Russian immigrants in 1932, and the church itself was consecrated in 1937. Here the services are sung in Church Slavonic by a four-voice choir in the Russian church tradition, and pilgrims come to honor St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, who reposed within these walls: the room where he passed away is now a chapel.
Services are held every Saturday at 6 PM (All-Night Vigil) and every Sunday at 9:30 AM (Hours and Divine Liturgy), on alternate Sundays at 8 AM there is a Divine Liturgy in English, and major feasts bring additional services. For those who cannot come in person, there is a live video broadcast on YouTube.
Parish life:
- The parish school of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco on Saturdays: Law of God, Russian language, Russian history and culture, and literature
- A kindergarten for Russian-speaking children ages 4 to 6: lessons in Russian, reading, math and logic, music, dance and art, and children holidays such as Yolka, Cheesefare, and Pascha
- A choir that sings from Znamenny chant to Bortniansky, Chesnokov, and modern composers
- A sisterhood: lunches after Liturgy and care for the sick and elderly
