Two Minutes Alone

Stereotypes about cats: where is the truth

A room in Corvallis, Oregon. Empty, unfamiliar, free of scent. Two enter it: a person and their cat. For two minutes, they simply exist there together. Then the person stands up and leaves, closing the door behind them. For another two minutes, the cat remains alone in an unfamiliar space. Then the person returns. That's it. Six minutes. No treats, no toys, no commands. Observers sitting in another room are watching exclusively for what happens in the final two minutes - at the reunion.

This protocol is called the secure base test, and it wasn't designed for cats. Psychologist Mary Ainsworth developed it in the 1960s for human infants, to measure the quality of attachment to a mother. The logic is simple and unsparing: a child with secure attachment, on seeing the adult return, quickly settles and goes back to exploring the room. A child with insecure attachment either clings and can't be calmed, or pointedly ignores the person who has come back.

For half a century, the test was applied to children. Then to primates. Then, in 2018, to dogs.

In September 2019, the journal Current Biology published work by Kristyn Vitale and her colleagues at Oregon State University, who ran the same test on cats. The recordings were evaluated by attachment specialists, using the same criteria applied to infants.

The result is worth stating in full.

Of the seventy kittens whose behaviour could be classified, 64.3 percent showed secure attachment. Adult cats: 65.8 percent.

In human infants, that figure is roughly 65 percent.

In dogs, according to a comparable study: 61 percent.

Cats turned out to be no less attached to their people than dogs. And in practically the same proportion as children are attached to their mothers.

What exactly has been overturned here

The value of this work isn't the charming number but the methodology.

The researchers didn't invent a "cat test" that could be tailored to produce the desired conclusion. They took an instrument with sixty years of history, designed for a different species, and applied it without modification. Independent experts did the evaluating, against established criteria.

That's what makes the result difficult to dispute.

Vitale added a detail that reframes the conversation entirely. After the experiment, some of the cats went through a six-week course of socialization and training. Not one of them changed attachment type.

"It appears that once an attachment style has been established between a cat and its person, it remains fairly stable," she says.

And now the uncomfortable part.

If two-thirds of cats are securely attached, then the famous feline independence - that same aloofness people find so charming and treat as a defining trait of the species - doesn't describe cats in general.

It describes the remaining third.

"Cats with insecure attachment tend to run, hide, or behave in an aloof way," Vitale says. "For a long time there's been a biased assumption that all cats are like this. But the majority use their person as a source of security."

Which means the aloof animal that doesn't come to greet you when you get home may not be a proud creature living life on its own terms.

It may be a creature that feels anxious around you.

An unpleasant thought. But a far more interesting one than any list of "eight reasons."

Now, about the genre

Here the tone has to shift, because an entire industry of scientific plausibility has been built up around cats.

You've certainly encountered the claims. Cats cut heart attack risk by a third. Purring knits bones back together. Cat owners are smarter than dog owners. Cats can detect cancer.

Each of these traces back to something real. And each, on its way to your feed, lost roughly everything that made it scientific.

The most sobering audit of this genre came from the RAND Corporation in 2017.

Researchers took data from a California health survey: 2,236 households with a cat or dog and 2,955 without animals. The question was whether children growing up with pets are healthier.

First they ran the numbers directly, the way it had been done for decades. The picture was lovely: children from households with animals turned out to be noticeably healthier, more active, and their parents complained less often about mood, behaviour, and capacity to learn.

Then they adjusted for household income, housing type, and a range of other circumstances.

The effect vanished. Completely.

"We couldn't find evidence that children in families with dogs or cats are better off, either psychologically or physically," said Layla Parast, a statistician at RAND. "The entire research team was surprised. All of us have animals or grew up with them. We were simply going on our own experience and assuming the connection existed."

The explanation turned out to be mundane. Cats are acquired by people who have housing where a cat is permitted, money for a veterinarian, and time. It isn't children with cats who are healthier - it's children from families who can afford a cat.

Statisticians call this confounding. Everyone else calls it a mistake made over and over again.

Parast also articulated what would settle the argument: a genuine test would require a randomized experiment in which some families are given animals and others aren't, followed for fifteen years or so. "Such a study would be too expensive, and I'm afraid nobody would fund it."

A closer look at specific legends

The three most durable claims deserve individual attention.

Purring heals bones. The source is work by bioacoustician Elizabeth von Muggenthaler, presented at a conference in the early 2000s. She measured the frequencies of cat purring and noted that the range of roughly twenty-five to one hundred fifty hertz overlaps with frequencies that, in certain vibration therapy studies, showed effects on bone tissue.

An interesting observation. But between "the frequencies overlap" and "purring heals human fractures" lies a chasm nobody has crossed: no clinical trials in humans have been conducted. It's a hypothesis repeated so many times it has acquired the appearance of fact.

Cat owners are smarter. A Carroll University study, a survey of roughly six hundred students, presented at a conference. About eleven percent of participants preferred cats - meaning conclusions about superiority rest on a few dozen people who self-identified into that group. That isn't a result, it's a marginal observation. Published in a peer-reviewed journal and replicated by other groups - then it would be worth discussing seriously.

A cat reduces heart attack risk. The University of Minnesota study genuinely exists, draws on a large national sample, and genuinely did show an association. But it was a conference presentation rather than a peer-reviewed publication, and observational by nature: it documents a coincidence, not a cause. The claim that a cat "lowers cholesterol" doesn't follow from it at all - that was added by people retelling it, for persuasive effect.

Note the pattern. None of the three is fabricated. All three are real scientific events, stretched into a shape the original data can't support.

But this one holds up

It would be dishonest to leave the reader with skepticism alone, because one of the claims on the list isn't just supported, it's supported elegantly.

A cat in the home during a child's first year of life reduces the risk of allergies.

In December 2018, Bill Hesselmar's group at the University of Gothenburg published work in PLOS ONE testing not the fact itself but its dose dependence - whether the effect scales with the number of animals. In classical epidemiology, this is a strong signal: if more exposure produces more effect, coincidence becomes unlikely.

The dose dependence was there.

Among children aged seven to nine who had neither cats nor dogs at home during their first year of life, allergic manifestations had occurred at some point in 49 percent. As the number of animals rose, that share fell consistently. Among children raised with five or more pets, not one had allergies.

Sensitization declined as well - and not only to animals, but to pollen.

The authors called this the "mini-farm effect." The idea is that several animals create a microbial diversity in an apartment that faintly resembles a rural environment, and early acquaintance between the immune system and that diversity teaches it not to overreact. It's a specific case of the hygiene hypothesis, which explains why allergies became a disease of prosperous cities.

Caveats are necessary: the groups with the highest number of animals contained few children, and the work remains observational. But here there's a comprehensible mechanism, dose dependence, and agreement with earlier data.

This is arguably the only item on the entire list that can be told without qualifications in parentheses.

The question nobody asks

All of this literature is structured the same way: what the cat does for us. Health, sleep, blood pressure, loneliness, intelligence.

The Corvallis study, taken seriously, asks the reverse question.

If two-thirds of cats are attached to their person the way a child is attached to a mother, and if that attachment type forms early and then doesn't change even after dedicated work - then the relationship turns out to be asymmetrical, and not in our favour.

To them we aren't a companion or a source of food. We are the point of safety.

From this follow things that don't appear in lists of "reasons to get one."

A cat living in a Canadian apartment spends practically its entire life indoors: for half the year the temperature outside makes letting it out impossible, and in the city, roads and coyotes are added to the cold. This is the right decision - outdoor cats live far shorter lives. But it means that its entire world, all of its stimulation, and all of its security are concentrated in one person and a few dozen square metres.

Which gives us not "eight reasons to get a cat," but several conditions under which doing so is honest.

Vertical space. A cat needs height: shelves, windowsills, the ability to survey a room from above. This isn't a luxury but a way of feeling in control of territory.

A window with a view. The only window onto the world for an animal that never goes out through it.

Hunting instead of a bowl. Cats evolved to eat twelve to twenty times a day in small portions, catching each one. A bowl filled in the morning for the whole day is a direct route to obesity, which has become a widespread problem among North American house cats. Puzzle feeders and distributing food in small portions solve both the physiology and the boredom at once.

A second animal - not always. The idea that "a cat needs a friend" is far from universally true: cats aren't pack animals, and introducing one to an adult territorial cat frequently creates chronic stress rather than company.

And an honest calculation. Veterinary care in Canada is expensive, insurance likewise, and the decision about serious treatment is usually made suddenly and at an inconvenient moment.

What remains

The temptation with this subject is to want to justify a cat by its benefits. To find a study, print out a table, prove that an animal in the home is a rational decision.

Science answers this evasively. Some effects didn't survive the confounding check. Some rest on conference presentations a decade old. One item - allergies - is confidently supported, but applies only to children and only to the first year of life.

But that same science reported something that wasn't on the list of "reasons" at all.

It reported that an animal customarily described as a creature that walks by itself, in two out of three cases, waits for its person's return exactly the way a child does.

Two minutes in an empty room - and relief at the sound of the door opening.

That isn't a health benefit, or blood pressure, or cholesterol. It is, on reflection, a great deal more - and certainly more serious.

Because a benefit would be an exchange.

This is an obligation.
