A guitar from Alfa Romeo
Sometimes an object of luxury appears not where one expects it. Not in a jewellery workshop, not in an automotive atelier and not in a boutique on a grand shopping street, but at the meeting point of two passions: Italian sports cars and live electric sound. That is where the Alfa Romeo guitar by the British workshop Harrison Custom Guitar Works comes in - a rare object that can be admired as a design piece, a collector’s artefact and a serious musical instrument at the same time.
This electric guitar was created by Harrison Custom Guitar Works in collaboration with Alfa Romeo and released as an ultra-limited project dedicated to the history of the Italian marque. Only 11 examples were planned, one for each decade of Alfa Romeo’s existence at the time. That production number immediately moves the instrument beyond the category of unusual accessory and into the world of collectible objects, where sound and materials matter, but so do history, symbolism and rarity.
Visually, the guitar is instantly recognizable as an homage to Alfa Romeo. Its semi-open body is inspired by the brand’s famous radiator grille - the signature shield without which the classic Alfa image is almost impossible to imagine. The instrument is finished in rich Alfa Red, while the Alfa Romeo badge serves as the volume control. It is exactly the kind of detail that may seem like a decorative joke at first, but in fact connects automotive identity and musical function in a single gesture.
Yet the real value of this guitar is not only in its striking shape. Harrison Custom Guitar Works is known as a workshop focused on bespoke instruments and serious hand-built craftsmanship. Each example took around eight months to complete. The body was made from wood with a maple cap, precision aluminium components were used, and the construction included details designed not merely for display, but for real musical performance.
The instrument also contains more subtle references to Alfa Romeo’s automotive culture. The Quadrifoglio motif - the green four-leaf clover long associated with Alfa’s sporting heritage - appeared in the fretboard design. Metal elements, including parts of the bridge, tailpiece and pickups, visually echo the structure of the radiator grille and the engineering aesthetic of the automobile.
The result is an object that resists a single category. For a musician, it is a rare custom guitar with a character unlike mass-produced instruments. For an Alfa Romeo enthusiast, it is almost a miniature automotive object, except that instead of an engine it has pickups, wood, metal and strings. For a collector, it is a limited piece in which brand legend meets craft.
What makes it especially interesting is that the guitar does not simply place an automotive logo on an ordinary instrument. It translates the language of Alfa Romeo into another material form. The triangular grille becomes the body, the badge becomes a control, the sporting red becomes a stage presence, and the idea of Italian speed becomes musical energy. This is not a garage souvenir and not a decorative toy for the wall. It is an example of how good design can cross the boundaries between different worlds and still remain convincing.
In an era when many luxury collaborations feel like quick marketing exercises, the Alfa Romeo guitar by Harrison Custom Guitar Works seems more sincere. It requires time, handwork and an understanding of both cultures - automotive and musical. Perhaps that is why it works so well as an image: it is not merely a guitar for an Alfa Romeo fan and not merely an Alfa Romeo for a musician. It is a rare object for someone who understands that style is not a logo, but precision in the details.
