The project was created inside 140 New Montgomery Street, the famous Art Deco tower built in 1925 for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. The building itself is an important part of San Francisco’s architectural history: it once symbolized the age of telephone communication, and decades later became home to companies of the new digital economy. This contrast is the central intrigue of the Yelp project: an old city, a historic shell, the vertical structure of a tower - and inside it, the young, flexible, noisy, social culture of an internet company.

Studio O+A did not approach the task as a simple decoration of office floors. The designers created what they called a vertical campus, distributed across multiple levels. Unlike a traditional technology campus in the suburbs, where employees move freely between buildings, everything here had to happen inside an urban tower. The main challenge was to prevent the floors from becoming isolated office boxes and instead make them work as one connected environment.

A campus turned upward

In the classic Silicon Valley campus, the horizontal plane matters: people meet in courtyards, cafés, open spaces and between buildings. In a historic San Francisco tower, that luxury of space does not exist. So Studio O+A turned the idea of a campus vertically. Social areas, informal meeting rooms, kitchens, lounge spaces and places for chance encounters were distributed across different floors, encouraging employees not to remain confined to their own level.

This is what makes the project feel especially contemporary. A good office today should not merely seat people. It should provoke encounters, create routes, encourage teams to cross paths and give employees a reason to go up or down to another floor. For a company like Yelp, built around local recommendations, urban energy, reviews, restaurants, neighbourhoods and real human experience, this office logic feels particularly precise.

Each floor received its own character, while all the spaces were united by a larger idea: the office should feel not like a corporate machine, but like a city inside a building. There are areas for concentration, open work zones, intimate corners for conversation, larger shared spaces and details that create a sense of informality.

The building’s history as part of the design

One of the project’s strengths is its respect for the historic shell. 140 New Montgomery was not turned into a sterile white office stripped of memory. On the contrary, Studio O+A used the character of the building as an important layer of the design. Art Deco, older materials, the scale of the tower and the feeling of the city’s past all became a backdrop for contemporary work culture.

The interior combines natural wood, industrial details, vintage references, rich colours, soft furniture and elements that recall restaurants, bars, small local establishments and the urban environment. This is not accidental. Yelp as a brand is connected with discovering places: cafés, shops, services and neighbourhood spots that shape real city life. The office therefore does not look like an abstract technology laboratory. It feels more like a carefully assembled map of urban experiences.

This approach makes the space warmer and more human. There is less cold corporate polish and more tactility: wood, light, textures, informal zones and decorative accents. It is an office that wants to be not only efficient, but memorable.

The workplace as a social environment

That is why projects such as Yelp Headquarters at 140 New Montgomery have become even more interesting. They show that the office of the future cannot simply be a place of required attendance. It must offer what working from home cannot: the energy of the city, chance encounters, a strong environment, a sense of belonging and an experience that cannot be downloaded through a screen.

Yelp later reduced its presence in this building and moved toward a more flexible work model, reflecting the broader transformation of the office market after the pandemic. But the Studio O+A project has not become less valuable because of that. On the contrary, today it reads as an important example of what an office should be if a company truly wants space to have meaning.

140 New Montgomery continues to be one of San Francisco’s notable office towers, and the format of a historic building adapted for modern technology companies has proven surprisingly resilient. In an era when many offices struggle with vacancy, the best buildings - those with strong architecture, a good location and thoughtful shared spaces - remain desirable.

That is why Yelp’s office remains interesting not only as an archival project from an era of technology optimism, but also as a lesson for the future: a good office should not be an obligation, but a place where there is a real reason to come.
