New BMW 5 Series Sedan

More dynamic than ever, rich in digital innovation, and for the first time available with a fully electric powertrain: this is the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. In the form of the BMW i5, the latest generation of the worlds most successful business sedan aims to take a leading role in the move toward sustainable premium mobility in the upper mid-size segment. Consistent electrification, the enhanced BMW Curved Display, the new control system with QuickSelect, expanded digital services, and a stronger focus on sustainability throughout the entire product life cycle all reflect the progress BMW Group is making in the key areas shaping the future of the automotive industry.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan entered the market in October 2023. The new generation is offered worldwide with a fully electric drive system and, depending on the market, with plug-in hybrid powertrains as well as highly efficient petrol and diesel engines featuring 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Like all previous generations of the model, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5 are also manufactured.

Sporting elegance and a striking presence through a new design language

A clear and restrained design language emphasizes the sporting elegance and confident presence of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Compared with the previous model, the new generation has grown by 97 millimetres in length to 5,060 millimetres, by 32 millimetres in width to 1,900 millimetres, and by 36 millimetres in height to 1,515 millimetres. The wheelbase has been extended by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres.

The front end of the new BMW 5 Series is defined by a modern interpretation of the brand’s twin headlights and signature BMW kidney grille. Almost vertically arranged LED elements serve as turn indicators and daytime running lights. The forward-projecting BMW kidney grille features a broad surround and is available with the optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting.

Viewed from the side, a high shoulder line, powerful surface treatment, and two precisely drawn character lines give the body an athletic structure. Black side-sill elements, flush-fitting door handles, and an embossed number 5 at the base of the C-pillar add distinctive visual details. The dynamically stretched proportions flow into a powerful rear end. Slim rear lights divided by a chrome strip provide an expressive new interpretation of BMW’s familiar L-shaped light signature.

The dynamic character of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan can be further enhanced with the optional M Sport Package, M Sport Package Pro, and M Carbon Package. From market launch, the exterior paint range includes three BMW Individual finishes.

Driving pleasure and long-distance comfort in an innovative atmosphere

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan creates ideal conditions for the brand’s signature driving pleasure in everyday traffic while also delivering a high level of comfort on long journeys. A spacious interior, modern functionality, excellent acoustic comfort, high-quality carefully crafted materials, refined workmanship, and advanced digital services define the atmosphere inside the cabin.

Compared with the previous model, the number of physical buttons and controls in the interior of the new BMW 5 Series has been significantly reduced. This is the result of consistent digitalization. The BMW Curved Display reinterprets the brand’s hallmark approach to vehicle control. The fully digital display system consists of a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display. The steering wheel has also been redesigned with a flattened lower section, while the control panels and selector lever on the centre console offer tactile feedback. Another highlight is the optional BMW Interaction Bar. This functional element, with striking illumination and a crystalline surface structure, extends across the full width of the instrument panel and into the door panels, integrating touch-sensitive controls.

A BMW first: a fully vegan interior

Newly designed sport seats are standard. Optional comfort seats offer a wide range of electric adjustment. The new BMW 5 Series is the first model from the brand to feature a fully vegan interior as standard. This applies to the seat surfaces, the instrument panel, the door panels, and the steering wheel. The leather-like Veganza upholstery is also available with decorative perforation. Additional optional equipment includes Merino leather upholstery in several two-tone variants.

The fully electric BMW i5 M60 xDrive as the flagship model

The fully electric BMW i5 is equipped with the advanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and is available in two versions. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive, with combined energy consumption according to WLTP of 20.6–18.2 kWh/100 km, combines a drive output of up to 442 kW, or 601 hp, with distinctive M performance characteristics and model-specific design features. Two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles create an electric all-wheel-drive system. System torque reaches up to 820 Nm when M Sport Boost or M Launch Control is activated. This enables the BMW i5 M60 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 230 km/h.

The BMW i5 eDrive40 is also available, with combined energy consumption according to WLTP of 18.9–15.9 kWh/100 km. Its electric motor drives the rear wheels and generates a maximum output of 250 kW, or 340 hp, with maximum torque of up to 430 Nm when Sport Boost or Launch Control is activated. The BMW i5 eDrive40 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 193 km/h.

The compact high-voltage battery is positioned in the vehicle floor and provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, the latest version of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat-pump technology for heating and cooling the cabin, drive system, and high-voltage battery help deliver an impressive range. The corresponding WLTP figures are 455–516 kilometres for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and 497–582 kilometres for the BMW i5 eDrive40. When required, the new MAX RANGE function can increase range by up to 25 percent by limiting power and speed and deactivating selected comfort functions.

Innovative eCharging solutions from BMW Charging

The Combined Charging Unit, or CCU, enables AC charging at up to 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. The high-voltage battery can be charged with DC power at up to 205 kW. For example, the battery charge level in the BMW i5 can be increased from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.

New petrol and diesel engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology

Petrol and diesel engines from the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics power units will be offered depending on the market. They feature 48-volt mild-hybrid technology and are paired as standard with the new 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

In spring 2024, the model range will be expanded with two plug-in hybrid versions using the latest-generation drive technology. A new inline six-cylinder diesel engine will become available for the BMW 5 Series in 2024. Another BMW i5 variant with electric all-wheel drive will also follow during 2024.

A unique balance between driving dynamics and travel comfort

The BMW 5 Series has always been known for its balance of sporting performance and long-distance comfort, and the new generation refines this formula even further. Contributing factors include the longest wheelbase in the segment, wider track widths on the front and rear axles, an almost perfectly balanced 50:50 axle-load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction, and increased rigidity in the connections between the body and chassis.

The advanced chassis technologies and control systems have been adapted to the weight balance associated with each drive concept. Standard equipment includes directly controlled wheel-slip limitation, an integrated braking system, and sport steering with a variable steering ratio. M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes, and Adaptive Suspension Professional, standard on the BMW i5 M60 xDrive, with electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering, and new driving dynamics management are available as options. The optional Adaptive M Suspension Professional also includes active roll stabilization with Active Roll Comfort. 18-inch light-alloy wheels are standard, while light-alloy wheels of up to 21 inches and performance tyres are available as options.

A more intensive partially automated driving experience: new Highway Assistant and Active Lane Change Assistant

A significantly expanded range of systems for partially automated driving and parking is available as standard or as optional equipment for the new BMW 5 Series. An innovative technology platform provides the basis for their outstanding functionality.

The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional, which includes Steering and Lane Control Assistant as well as Distance Control with Stop and Go function. In the United States, Canada, and Germany, it also includes Highway Assistant, which relieves the driver of steering tasks on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. At speeds of up to 130 km/h, the driver can take their hands off the steering wheel and place them comfortably, provided they continue to monitor the traffic situation attentively. For the first time in the world, the system in the new BMW 5 Series also includes Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation. This convenience function creates a new level of interaction between driver and vehicle: the car suggests a lane change, and the driver can confirm it simply by looking at the exterior mirror. If the traffic situation allows, Active Lane Change Assistant automatically performs the required steering movements.

The new BMW 5 Series is equipped as standard with Parking Assistant, including Reversing Assistant. With the optional Parking Assistant Professional, automated parking and manoeuvring over distances of up to 200 metres can be controlled either from inside the vehicle or from outside using a smartphone.

Intuitive operation and new digital experiences: BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 8.5

The enhanced BMW Curved Display and the control system with QuickSelect also contribute to the distinctive driving and travel experience in the new BMW 5 Series. Based on BMW Operating System 8.5, the system features a redesigned home screen with vertically arranged function icons on the driver’s side. QuickSelect allows direct access to functions without the need to enter submenus. The result is a more intuitive menu structure inspired by the logic of modern consumer electronics.

The new BMW iDrive works together with the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. The system is designed primarily for operation via the touchscreen and natural voice commands. In addition, the new BMW 5 Series is equipped with steering-wheel buttons and the BMW iDrive Controller on the centre console. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes the BMW Head-Up Display and Augmented View on the control display or instrument cluster. BMW Natural Interaction is also available, allowing selected functions to be controlled by gestures.

In-car gaming makes its debut in the new BMW 5 Series

BMW Operating System 8.5 also offers a broader range of digital content for information and entertainment, faster update cycles for functions, improved information about charging points for electric vehicles, and optimized access to many specific online services. For video streaming on the control display, YouTube and the Bundesliga In-Car app in cooperation with Xperi are available, along with a wide range of content on the TiVo platform.

In addition, the new BMW iDrive enables in-car gaming via the AirConsole platform, introduced for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series. Drivers and passengers can play casual games while the vehicle is stationary, for example to pass the time during a charging stop.

Optimized connectivity with up to four 5G mobile antennas

Other innovations include the Welcome Scenario with a light show and personalized greeting, optionally including a dynamic light carpet. BMW Digital Key Plus is now available for compatible iOS and Android smartphones as well as Apple Watch. With two 5G mobile antennas as standard and four as an option, the new business sedan provides excellent connectivity and call quality. The Personal eSIM fully integrates the vehicle into the customer’s digital ecosystem. In selected countries, BMW ID also enables automatic parking payment directly from the car.

The new BMW 5 Series offers a choice of up to six My Modes for a more comprehensive interaction with the vehicle. Standard equipment also includes optimized smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. Thanks to Remote Software Upgrade, the vehicle can always stay up to date with the latest software. With BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can also test selected functions free of charge for one month and then order them for a chosen period.

The launch of the new BMW 5 Series also marks the beginning of a new chapter in customer service. With Proactive Care, BMW is creating a new platform for communicating with owners whenever different types of vehicle service may be required. The focus is on recognizing the vehicle’s service needs, including with the help of artificial intelligence, and proactively offering the customer suitable solutions.
