Семейный дом на берегу лесного озера

Quebec, Canada

Located within the lush forested landscape of Quebecs Laurentian Mountains in Canada, the 334-square-metre Estrade Residence makes a striking impression on the shore of Lake Cabane. After studying the sites steep, rocky topography, the architects at MU Architecture chose to emphasize the character of this natural setting through a sensitive architectural intervention. The primary goal was to design a home in complete harmony with its surroundings.

The site takes the form of a rocky ridge descending into the lake. Several volumes of the house are arranged to embed themselves into the land, curve around its irregularities, or rise above them. Their stepped and overlapping composition creates a series of terraces, establishing a thoughtful dialogue between architecture and the natural landscape.

Intriguing in its solid, sculptural massing, the Estrade Residence reveals itself gradually, unfolding volume by volume before the viewer’s eyes. A light, airy staircase with glass balustrades instead of traditional railings welcomes visitors at the entrance. Aligned precisely with a tall vertical window, it connects every level of the house through its asymmetrical flights. Minimalism and meticulous attention to detail bring a sense of clarity and comfort to the interior, immediately setting the tone for the entire project.

On the main floor, a generous communal area is designed with panoramic windows opening onto the lake. Filled with natural light, this level extends outward to a veranda. The kitchen, fitted with built-in cabinetry in black-stained ash that contrasts with the whiteness of the walls, breaks the monochrome calm of the space. A double-sided fireplace placed at the centre of the living room reinforces the warm atmosphere of intimacy and comfort. Natural wood floors continue out toward the terraces, creating a subtle, seamless connection between interior and exterior. This main cedar-clad volume forms the heart of the home, bringing the whole family together. It also acts as a transitional zone between the lower level, reserved for the children and defined by a more active character, and the tranquil upper floor, where the parents’ bedroom is located.
