What SPF Actually Means

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the number is a laboratory measurement of how much longer it takes protected skin to redden compared to unprotected skin - not a measure of how strong the sunscreen "feels" or how long it truly lasts once you're sweating, swimming, or toweling off in real life. The related myth that sunscreen meaningfully blocks vitamin D synthesis has also lost credibility: because most people already apply sunscreen too thinly and too inconsistently to fully block UV in the first place, and because vitamin D can be obtained reliably through diet and supplementation, major dermatology and cancer organizations no longer treat this as a legitimate reason to skip daily protection.

The Mature Way to Think About This

Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, applied generously and reapplied every two hours outdoors, paired with shade, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses when the sun is strongest, remains the single most effective, most evidence-backed intervention available against a disease that is almost entirely preventable. Everything else - the tint, the texture, the serum-grade ingredients, the stick you can swipe across your nose between errands - exists to make that one habit easier to keep.
